Handle Bar/ Stem Issue, How to Fix it?
OK I have a early 1990's dyno gt performer and I have had issues with the handle bar alignment and the front tire. The handlebars are able to move left and right at the stem when you hold the front tire with your legs. So I tried to tighten the nut at the top of the stem, I could barely tighten it, so to make sure it was the right part to be messing around with I loosened it and they became easier to move. So my question is basically what do you guys think the problem is because the nut is all the way tight and they still move when some force is applied to them and it throws off the alignment really bad.
Depends on the type of stem you have. Below are two versions.
1" wedge system (one bolt at the top, no cap):
-Loosen the bolt until it sticks up about 1/2" from the stem
-Tap the bolt with a small hammer to break the wedge free inside the steerer tube
-Pull stem and handlebar assembly up & out of the steerer tube (you may have to release the brake cables depending on how long they are)
-Inspect stem and wedge for any wear/damage ie. cracked wedge
-If all looks good, clean dirt and old grease from stem and re-grease with a light coat
-Install stem & tighten firmly
1 1/8th" clamp system (small allen head bolt at top with dust cap):
-Loosen side allen bolts of stem
-Loosen top allen bolt (stem should move freely on steerer tube)
-Align front wheel and firm up the single top allen bolt
-Hold front brake and check for play in the headset, slightly tighten top bolt if necessary
-Once play is eliminated and alignment good, tighten side allen bolts firmly
Hope that helps,
Mike
