What style drill bit should be used to drill into carbon steel black pipe on an angle?
I will be using a verticle drill press and the pipe will be thirty degrees up from horizontal.
Pretty tuff to do.
If the 30 degree hole needs to be precise, it will have to be done in a milling machine.
If you can handle a little out of roundness, it can be done in a drill press.
You would use a standard metal cutting drill bit.
This will be a two step process as a standard drill bit is incapable of starting a hole on an angle.
Step one:
This step will be done with the work piece flat against the drill table/ 90 degree to the drill bit, in a vice, or on two "V" blocks with two clamp bars.
Layout the hole position and center punch the hole center point.
Depending on the hole size, you may want to drill a pilot hole, 1/4".
Then drill the finished hole size with the full size drill bit.
After the initial hole is drilled, re-jig the pipe to the 30 degree angle.
For this operation, you could try an end mill in place of a drill bit, it would work just like a milling machine. The only problem is a drill press does not have the rigidity of a milling machine.
Slow down the drill press speed because the drill bit or end mill will tend to catch the upper edge of the hole.
With the drill press running, slowly bring the drill bit or end mill down, till it starts contacting the hole.
Continue, really slowly and you should be able to finish the hole.
