The term police boots is a misnomer as there is no such thing as a single style
We often get hung up on names and expressions and police boots is a perfect example. The term implies that there is a specific type of boot that a police officer would wear, but that is far from true. If you were to have a look around any police department you would find the array of footwear mind-boggling large. The reason for this huge amount of different footwear is firstly we all like different things, and secondly the range of boots that could be classed as police boots is vast. The range of manufacturers includes 5.11 Tactical, Magnum, Haix, Smith & Wesson, Wellco and Original SWAT to name just a few.
Individual needs also come into play when you are talking about police boots. What I would find extremely comfortable may be okay for you but you may find it less comfortable than I do. Every foot is different, high insteps, low insteps, and flat feet, wide feet, small feet and very large feet, and that is the very reason no one boot can be a police boot. People choose their footwear for many different reasons. Predominantly the police would choose a boot that offers protection, support, cushioning, shock absorption and all this means one thing, comfort.
Choosing police boots can be a bit of a minefield if you don't do a little research first. If you have specific needs from your boot such as a wide fitting then a search online will give you an idea of who does variable widths in their range. If you have petite feet or need extra large sizes then again a look online will give you an idea of who manufactures boots in the specification you need. You may need extra arch support or a 9" high boot to help with ankle support, and all of these things are what you need to consider before you even go near the checkout with your police boots of choice.
What you may also have to consider is budget, but a word of warning, don't set the budget too cheaply. Cheap police boots are likely to be poor quality and will fall apart quickly and probably be extremely uncomfortable from day one. Even on a limited budget there are some fantastic boots out there, and don't sacrifice your feet for a few extra dollars. What you save in dollars will badly affect your feet in terms of comfort and possible injury. Waterproof, steel or composite toe, lace up or zip or both, the choice of styles is incredible.
The question now is what police boots should be called if the term is wrong. Boots that police wear would be nearer the mark but a bit of a mouthful, or we could just call them work boots. In actual fact, police boots are in many guises such as the duty boot, tactical boot and military boot, as all of these are suitable for police wear. No matter what the boot is called the main thing is it has to be fit for the purpose you need it. Go find your perfect boot and just call it perfectly comfortable.

Are zip up field boots less nice then non zip up ones for hunter jumper shows?

No, they are perfectly fine, and I like them 10X better. You can get them off easily and if you've ever worn pull-on ones, you know that it takes a whole crew of people to take them off. I've seen both being used at shows and they should be perfectly acceptable.
