is the gerber gator 2 a good knife for the money?

The thumb notch is small and will make it harder to open than better folders/clip knives. Benchmade has a model in this price range and it's very similar. The 420 steel is sub-standard for a decent knife. It is corrosion resistant but won't hold an edge well and is not very strong. AUS8 and 440C are good places to start for a decent blade. Gerber has a good name and so does Benchmade. When people keep hearing the name they attach a "weight" to it--they have a positive prejudice. Gerber is taking advantage of this IMHO here to sell an underachieving knife, albeit at a good price point. If you're just fooling around and want a nice looking knife with a good grip, go for it. If you're looking for one that will last several years and handle regular cutting without persistent sharpening, move on.
