5 Things You Must Consider When Purchasing a Rangefinder
There are five very important factors that you must consider when you are planning to purchase a laser rangefinder. The five most important things to look for include range, magnification, accuracy, weight, and weatherproofing. Below I will describe more of what you should look for and why.
Range
You need to know how far your laser rangefinder will be accurate, many models have the ability to measure distances up to 1500 yards, that’s almost one mile. Longer ranges are recommended for rifle hunters while shorter or longer distance rangefinders will work well for bow hunters and archers.
Magnification
Magnification is the process of enlarging an object in appearance. Magnification is measured on rangefinders by multiplication, for example, a magnification of x5 means it can enlarge items up to five times the actual size of the object, This makes sure you hit those trophy targets by knowing exactly what you are aiming at. For shorter range rangefinders a lower magnification works well whereas with long range rangefinders a higher magnification is best.
Accuracy
Accuracy is a measurement that means closeness to the truth. A rangefinder may have an accuracy of +/- 1 yard, this means the measurement you receive could be up to 1 yard over or 1 yard under the actual distance. Most rangefinders will give you accurate results under nearly any weather conditions. The higher the accuracy will improve your results with your rangefinder.
Weight
While the weight of the rangefinder will not change the effectiveness of your rangefinder it is important because you do not what to purchase a rangefinder that is to heavy for you to carry with you for a days hunt. Make sure it is a weight you can easily hold to your eye for a reasonable amount of time.
Weatherproof
By weatherproof I mean make sure your rangefinder is waterproof and fog proof. You do not want to risk the chance of your rangefinder being ruined by rain, Since much hunting is done is very warm or very cold conditions frog proofing is important, the heat of you skin may fog your lenses in the cold, or humidity in the warm conditions. Don’t risk seeing your target but not being able to get your range. Once again weatherproofing will not increase the effectiveness of your rangefinder but it will cause a lot less stress to you and come in quite handy at times.

Optical/prismatic rangefinders?
I have recently purchased a prismatic optical rangefinder which now will be used to measure land for my upcoming retirement and then for many years of pleasurable hunting.
The rangefinder is made by Ranging, Inc. I need a few pieces of advice. I believe I know the principle of how this works. However, there does not seem to be any resistance with the ranging dial as I attempt to focus on a distant landmark. Should there be any resistance on the ranging dial? Would anybody happen to have a link which would include the directions for a Ranging 400.
Please note: This is not a laser rangefinder. This is an optical/prismatic rangefinder.

Optical range finders fell out of popularity about 15 years ago when low cost highly accurate laser models became available. Now days they make some nice speciality models for archery hunters - since they can't transmit a light at a target while hunting. Other than this one application - optical are abandoned. I do not know anyone except for the bow hunters that own any.
Truth is - the optical models were never, ever, popular. Most everyone who used one regretted the purchase since they were so inacurate....... because you needed the eyesight of a fighter pilot to properly us one. Anyone with less than perfect 20-20 vision had issues with them.
My laser range finder is about 10 years old but was top of the line. It's a bit large, size of pair of binoculars, but, it does 20-600 yards just fine......... and can pick up off of any object, and even work in the rain. It was a great investment and I carry it in my truck everywhere - I now use it to calculate long wire runs.
I say all this because you are much better off investing in a laser model. Especially if you are looking at land. Opticals I have used only tell you it is greater than 375 yards but less than 400 yards. My laser tells me it is 381.7 yards, and, I can measure it three times, usually get the exact same reading - so I am highly confident of the accuracy.
