How often should you clean your muzzle loader?
I just bought a CVA optima and im using IMR White hots with trip 7 primers. Do I need to clean my barrel after every shot or would waiting 4-6 shots be ok. Im new to the black powder world. And would it be ok just to ram a peice of oiled paper towel through the barrel or do i need the patches.
You’re using modern black powder substitute which burn much cleaner than regular black powder. The reason people swabbed the bore so often with true black powder was the fouling build up so fast you couldn’t ram a ball home unless you did. I have seen wooden ramrods break from people trying to push the patched ball down the bore with too much fouling.
I found with most black powder substitutes you could fire 8 or 10 shots maybe more without cleaning the bore. The way to know when you must swab the bore is when it gets had to push the patched ball, sabot or conical down the bore.
Also do not use water or oil if your getting ready for another shot both can reduce the black powder substitute from burning right. You use water to clean it out when done for the day, run a few dry patches to remove any water left then give the bore a VERY light coat of gun oil or Hoppe’s #9. To swab the bore using BP substitute while shooting just run a dry patch through. And then fire it with just a cap to clean out the nipple, then load er up.
To swab the bore with true black powder wet a patch with soapy water and run it through a few times then run a dry patch and then fire a percussion cap of 209 primer to clear the nipple and your ready to fire again. The old way was you spit on a patch and swab the bore with that, both ways work. But oil makes a mess when mixed with BP fouling.
