What makes a rod such as a G. loomis or other expensive rods?
Better than a rod that sells for under a 100 dollars? I am talking freshwater bass fishing. Do they have that much better feel?
I've never owned a G.Loomis- but I've had the chance to "demo" one for a fishing trip.
I guess the main difference between a GL and other rods is how light it is. And because it was so light, it was extremely sensitive- like having a sonar unit attached to your rod!
It was SO light, well-balanced and sensitive it felt a bit "fragile", until you hooked into a fish! Plenty of power.
In my opinion, G. Loomis are still "the best", but rod company's are quickly catching up with new advancements in graphite/Nano-rod building technology.
Here are some rods that are MUCH cheaper than a Loomis with a marginal difference in weight & sensitivity. (Of course, they won't have the same quality guides/handles etc, but that's another reason G. Loomis are so expensive):
1. Abu Garcia, Veritas- (These rods are getting lots of buzz. I've had the opportunity to check these out. Very nice!)- http://www.basspro.com/Abu-Garcia-Veritas-Casting-Rods/product/10219171/-1741241
2. St. Croix, Avid- (These are VERY comparable to a Loomis for about $50-$80 less.)- http://www.basspro.com/St--Croix®-Avid-Series®-Trigger-Rods/product/98384/-1440505
3. Cabelas, MAGtouch- (These aren't G. Loomis. But I'd rather have 2 of these than 1 Loomis! And they are currently on sale for $69- down from $99)- http://www.cabelas.com/product/Fishing/Fishing-Rods/Casting-Rods|/pc/104793480/c/104764680/sc/104823180/Cabelas-MagTouch174-Casting-Rods/703551.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Ffishing-fishing-rods-casting-rods%2Fcabelas%2F_%2FN-1102351%2B4294967225%2FNe-4294967225%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104823180%3FWTz_st%3DGuidedNav%26WTz_stype%3DGNU
In my opinion, the only reason to purchase a Loomis rod would be for Soft Plastic's or Jigging- or any application where super-sensitivity is vital.
Otherwise, you can find plenty of "almost Loomis" products that will do the job (and do it WELL) for a cheaper price tag.
If you plan to do any tournament Bass fishing here's another reason NOT to have a Loomis- Last season, my Bass fishing partner lost a Tournament Legend/Curado combo overboard- that's a $400 PLUS outfit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Think about this- Rods and reels get stepped on, people mis-handle them, children accidentally lose them overboard, Etc. I tell everyone who is in a market for a killer outfit this- Unless you can easily replace it, don't purchase it! There is nothing worse than watching your $400-$500 outfit get stepped on, go overboard, Etc. It's heart-breaking- trust me!
Outrageously expensive gear is VERY nice, and it does help you as an angler (to a point), BUT, it won't make you a better fisherman. I've beat plenty of other fishermen in Tourneys with my $200 outfit's, smaller/slower boat, lower grade electronics, Etc.
Knowing HOW and WHERE will always triumph over insane gear- (Well, for now- Once they come out with "X-ray-Sonar Goggles" and "Robotic Lures" you won't have to know ANYHING anymore! lol)
Hope this helps ya?
