What are the pros and cons of a mosin nagant rifle?
I would prefer input from people who owned or fired a mosin nagant. I heard that ammo is a bit harder to find, since it is a Russian caliber. How is the recoil? Are there any obvious flaws in the gun? Please, I would like to hear your input.
Lots of pros, not alot of cons! Pros include:
price--the cheapest surplus rifle you can buy!
performance--at roughly the power level of a .30-06, the 7.62x54R cartridge is sufficient for just about any North American big game.
accuracy--as accurate as any surplus rifle, and more accurate than most (as with all surplus firearms, you have to look the gun over well to be sure you're getting a good one).
durability--built like a tank; probably out of old tank parts!
ammo availability--more of a pro than a con. MN ammo is everywhere it needs to be, and it's STILL dirt cheap! All of the major European manufacturers make it. You can usually find it at your local gun shop. If not, you can buy a lifetime supply of it from an online retailer for a couple hundred bucks.
Cons are limited to:
weight--built like a tank almost always means as heavy as one too!
scopability--not really even a word, but it is harder to scope a MN because of its straight-bolt handle.
"cool" factor--not an issue if you don't let it be, and less of an issue since the release of Enemy at the Gates. The gun snobs and other immature shooters tend to look down on cheap surplus hardware; especially com-bloc stuff. But then if "coolness" really matters to you, you shouldn't own firearms.
