Need some Advice for Night Fishing???
I tried this grasshopper jitterbug type deal at 1 am yesterday and didn't catch jack. what lures work best for bass at night and when is the best time to fish at night? I ordered a large popper and I just need advice on how to fish it...should I start out quickly or slowly??? any help I would really appreciate thanks!!!
Jitterbug fishing: Some say you should "pause". But, I have found a "steady" ,slow, retrieve works best for me. Reel the lure just fast enough to hear the "plop plop plop". Scan the lake before dark and remember where the points and "weedlines" are in shallow water.
(Don't you fish from shore?) I would buy a nice pair of wader's or tall boots to use, (unless you live in gator or snake country! lol). Jitterbugs work great in a lake/pond that has a high concentration of Bass over 4-5 LB's,(esp a lake that also has a large Bullfrog/frog population).
When fishing at night, try to remember that unless it's a REALLY "bright-night" and the Moon is full, Bass are relying on their "lateral line/sense of smell", to find food.
This means you want to "ring the dinner bell" continuously. When fishing , DON'T pause the lure! Slowly, "swim" those Rapala's & worms. And make repeated casts to the same target/area.
They are "homing in" on the vibration the lure puts out, (when you pause you "stop ringing the dinner bell" and they can't find your lure). Make sure to use a "ribbontailed/curly-tailed" worm because it puts out just the "right" amount of "vibe". Senko's ,in this case, would make a poor night-fishing lure;they have no "swimming" tail, (I will have to try the "Carolina-rigged" Senko to see what Sexy BassF is talking about)!
My fav lure's at night are :
1. 6-10 inch Berkley Worm in Black,(1/8-1/4 "Florida" screw-in bulletweight)
2. 1/2 OZ gold Colorado-bladed spinnerbait w/black skirt and a trailer-hook/black grub body attached.
3. 1/2 OZ Heddon Spook Jr , Chartruese/black head. You have GOT to be able to "walk the dog" at night. Working a surface lure of any type "walk the dog fashion" works really well at night. (Don't pause when you "walk"!!) And don't buy a super "loud" topwater for night-fishing. I have fished Rattle-traps/"loud baits" at night and they just don't produce,(they put out too much racket/noise!) A little noise is "ok" but the noise of 14 "B.B.'S" in a lure, at night, is so un-natural it mostly just "spooks" them (and the whole lake/pond). Go with a "quieter" topwater and just "walk" it slowly.
4. Any "wide-wobble" crank works good! Manns 1- works EXCELLENT at night.
That is honestly what I use at night. And it works.
I have seen Bass chase frogs & bugs til they were almost "on shore"! While shore-fishing at night, I almost stepped on a huge Bass,(that's a great story I will tell another day! lol) This should tell you that Bass are more "aggressive" and usually "shallow" at night. They might be sitting in 8 inches of water waiting for some froggy or salamander to enter the water. That is why a worm/w weight works so well at night; you can throw it in "slop" and know that it won't get hung-up!
First, try to "blend-in" with the lake/pond. Listen to the sounds. If it's a quiet lake at night, don't start your fishing by throwing superloud stuff. Throw a worm (1st), then slowly work your way up to the loudest stuff/lures you've got. Along the way ,you WILL eventually find what works.
2ND. Nightfishing= Think "old blind man" trying to find his bag of Cheeto's in a room full of laundry. In other words, Bass trying to find a lure in a sea of weeds.
(I am surprised at your Q Addicted. You know most of this stuff already! lol)
