What to look for in women's roller derby skates?
Please include brand names, and anything you think might help. thank you!!!
Riedell boots, Roll-Line plates (and their metric tools, toe stops and 7mm axle nuts), Bones Reds bearings, and wheels in a few different "grips". (Durometer. Lower number=softer, for outdoors, around 78+, and harder for indoors and clean floors, around 90+.) "Muzzles" toe covers, they mold to the boot so the seam or toe doesn't get damaged.
Bearing puller/press, spare bearings.
Snazzy 72" skull laces, in pink.
This is my Holy Grail.
Sweet, sweet, speed and agility, may they be mine!
But to actually answer your question:
Boots that are leather and as tight as you can stand them if they're new. They'll stretch. For females, do consider a boot made off a womans last, like the Minx by Riedell. I didn't, I regret it.
I'd go with metal plates, but Riedell, Sunlite, SureGrip and Roll Line all make fine plates for derby.
Bones Reds bearings are fine, $35 or so per set, and with proper maintenance perform excellently. My bearings are far faster than I am.
Wheels are very personal; what works for one girl will not do a darn thing for another! I like the Atom Jukes 1.0, 95a, but nearly every skater has a "wheel graveyard" of ones they just had to have, so ask around to see if you can borrow some to try.
Keep an eye on Craigslist, eBay, Roll Line sells used ones, www.derbuy.com (a used derby gear site) and your local ads; occasionally you can totally score gear at a fraction of the price!
